Cold weather just makes you want to curl up with something warm. I’m a sucker for comfort food, especially anything chocolate. Great news on that front, cocoa is full of antioxidants, which fortunately reduce levels of the hormone cortisol which helps you pack on the pounds! It also has tons of fiber, which makes you feel more full. There’s a little cinnamon in the mix, which helps keep your blood sugar stable and reduce insulin spikes. Cayenne pepper revs up your metabolism and raises your resting heart rate (even when curled up in front of a fireplace). Besides all those great calorie torching benefits homemade hot cocoa is just good, really good, light years better than powdered mixes and just about as easy!
Spiced Cocoa for Four
1/4 cup honey
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
3 1/2 cups milk (I’m pretty picky about my milk over here, this is what we use)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine the honey, cinnamon, cayenne, and cocoa together into a paste. Heat the milk over low heat in a saucepan. Add the cocoa paste and stir to dissolve. Add the vanilla. Drink up!
Want chocolate but savory? I have that too right here
